postcards and midori

Thanks to two of my friends who've sent me greetings from their travel destinations, Thailand and Belgium!
I am super jealous of you two. Be sure to pack me in your suitcase on your next trip please.
Can't wait to see the both of you when you come back!

Though it was Friday night, I attended a lecture after work. :P
Midori Goto, the globally recognized violinist, gave a talk on the impact and presence of
Western music in Japan, followed by a conversation with Maestro Gerard Schwarz of the Seattle Symphony.
Such an AMAZING person...that is all I can say.
Not only is she an extremely talented, world renown musician,
but she is also a scholar (has a Masters in Psych), a professor,
and a powerful advocate for arts education and global peace.
Yet, she is only 38.
(fyi, I think her talk will be on uwtv shortly.)

Coconut Mochi Cake

I was invited to a potluck dinner the other day, and was asked to bring either a side dish or dessert.
Of course I chose dessert, and as suggested by Deborah, baked Coconut Mochi Cake!
I used a recipe I hadn't tried in my mother's Hawaiian Mochi recipe book (that she bought at Walmart in Hawaii! haha).
Yes...A book full of mochi recipes! Isnt' that something.
The texture turned out well! (I recall baking an awful mochi cake while in college...it was so stiff :( )

I had left behind the corner and the edge pieces of the cake since they were a little hard compared to the other pieces.
I came back from work today looking forward to snacking on one of them before dinner...and was shocked to see that I had only 1 piece left. This is what happens when you live at home.
My last piece...

I gave a piece to my boss today, and he liked it! Better yet, he has a sweet tooth and high standards for sweets. Yesss!

Chi Chi Dango (Baked) (I call it Coconut Mochi Cake...)
1 pound mochiko (16oz box)
2-1/4 cups sugar -> Used 2 cups instead
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1-1/2 cups water
1 can coconut milk (12 oz)
food color (optional)

1. Combine dry ingredients in large mixing bowl.
2. Add liquid ingredients to #1 and mix thoroughly with whisk.
3. Pour into greased 9 x 13 inch pan. Cover with foil.
4. Bake at 350F for 1 hour.
5. Remove foil and cool thoroughly for at least 3-4 hours. Cut with plastic knife.

I love this version of "Let the Good Times Roll"!

Fortune Cookie

remedy teas

[writing in English (for once) for Btau, who will go on a tea date with me next!]

For about 2~3 months after New Years, I was drafting up a manuscript to submit to a journal outside of my job,
(it's kinda silly because I did this experiment about 2 years ago in Japan, and the PI over there didn't contact
me for the entire 2 years...Then, he sent me a New Years e-mail this year...and, of course, he suggested that I write up a paper on that experiment.)
so I postponed my studying for a while.
I finally submitted the manuscript a few weekends ago, relaxed and played around,
and thought that I should probably start re-studying before I get any lazier.
So, I went studying at Remedy Teas, a cute little tea place that I found last year in Capitol Hill.

My pick: Biscotti Black Tea
The tea isn't sweetened, but you could totally tell that the tea was
biscotti flavored by its nice, not too strong aroma.
I think I liked it better when it was lukewarm; it tasted more like biscottis then!

my tea leaves

My friend's pick: Peach Oolong

They have the cutest Bodum teapot and cups!
I really want a small teapot or a nice infuser for work...

Lots of teas in bins with numbers on the lid (see the wall behind the register).
I think they have at least 200?

Yay...I actually concentrated on studying, which probably had not happened if I had just stayed at home!
Must keep it going...

Le Fooding seems to be a new sensation in French cuisine that's spreading to the U.S...!
The New Yorker has an intriguing article on this culinary movement taking place in France.
My life revolves around food. I love it.

yummy 3 course lunch & pound cake!

|| 03.28.2010 ||

Steelhead Diner!

Appetizer
Hot Smoked Wild Salmon Rillette with Pickled Red Onions & Herb Emulsion

Main Dish
Preserved Lemon Crusted Stream Raised Idaho Catfishwith Tellicherry Peppercorn Butter Sauce & Creamy Hominy Polenta

Quill Shaped Pasta & Pan Roasted Asparagus with Nettle Pesto, Wilted Spinach & Shaved Pecarino Toscano

Dessert

Olympic Mountain Lemon Sorbet

Banana Foster Crème Brulee

Main Dish

|| 本日 ||
