pasta salad

Ingredients
1 pound campanelle pasta -> I used farfalle pasta instead
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus 1/4 cup
1 small or 1/2 medium red onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 (6-ounce) can Italian tuna in oil, such as Flott, drained
1 pint (2 cups) cherry tomatoes, halved
8 ounces frozen artichoke hearts, thawed and quartered -> I used canned artichoke hearts instead
2 tablespoons capers, rinsed and drained
2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme leaves
1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the pasta and cook until tender but still firm to the bite, stirring occasionally, about 8 to 10 minutes. Drain and reserve about 1 cup of the pasta water.
In a 14-inch skillet, heat 1/4 cup oil over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring frequently, until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds until aromatic. Add the tuna to the skillet and, using a fork, break into chunks. Add the cherry tomatoes, artichoke hearts, capers, and thyme. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes begin to soften, about 8 to 10 minutes. Add the pasta, the remaining 1/4 cup olive oil, and the parsley. Toss until all the ingredients are coated, adding a little pasta water, if needed, to thin out the sauce. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Transfer the pasta to a serving bowl and serve warm or at room temperature.

Qué sabroso...!

Crema de Zanahorias
「Crema de...」

Ensalada de Salmon Marinado

Paella de Verduritas Tiernas

Atun a la Bilbaina

Flan Casero

RIP Shadow
My sympathy is with you, Deborah.

Fortune Cookie

remedy teas

[writing in English (for once) for Btau, who will go on a tea date with me next!]

For about 2~3 months after New Years, I was drafting up a manuscript to submit to a journal outside of my job,
(it's kinda silly because I did this experiment about 2 years ago in Japan, and the PI over there didn't contact
me for the entire 2 years...Then, he sent me a New Years e-mail this year...and, of course, he suggested that I write up a paper on that experiment.)
so I postponed my studying for a while.
I finally submitted the manuscript a few weekends ago, relaxed and played around,
and thought that I should probably start re-studying before I get any lazier.
So, I went studying at Remedy Teas, a cute little tea place that I found last year in Capitol Hill.

My pick: Biscotti Black Tea
The tea isn't sweetened, but you could totally tell that the tea was
biscotti flavored by its nice, not too strong aroma.
I think I liked it better when it was lukewarm; it tasted more like biscottis then!

my tea leaves

My friend's pick: Peach Oolong

They have the cutest Bodum teapot and cups!
I really want a small teapot or a nice infuser for work...

Lots of teas in bins with numbers on the lid (see the wall behind the register).
I think they have at least 200?

Yay...I actually concentrated on studying, which probably had not happened if I had just stayed at home!
Must keep it going...

Le Fooding seems to be a new sensation in French cuisine that's spreading to the U.S...!
The New Yorker has an intriguing article on this culinary movement taking place in France.
My life revolves around food. I love it.

yummy 3 course lunch & pound cake!

|| 03.28.2010 ||

Steelhead Diner!

Appetizer
Hot Smoked Wild Salmon Rillette with Pickled Red Onions & Herb Emulsion

Main Dish
Preserved Lemon Crusted Stream Raised Idaho Catfishwith Tellicherry Peppercorn Butter Sauce & Creamy Hominy Polenta

Quill Shaped Pasta & Pan Roasted Asparagus with Nettle Pesto, Wilted Spinach & Shaved Pecarino Toscano

Dessert

Olympic Mountain Lemon Sorbet

Banana Foster Crème Brulee

Main Dish

|| 本日 ||

first washington winery visit!

|| 3.20.2010 ||

Muscot Canelli, Chardonnay, Merlot
Muscot Canelli
Chardonnay

Sinister Hand...

braised lamb ragú

Brewery!
次はBrewery?!

Baking sleepover!

Earlier this month, my ex-roomies and I spent some quality time catching up on our lives...and, of course, baking during our sleepover!
One of my roomies used to bake randomly at midnight, during midterms, and whenever she got hungry.
It was great to bring back the tradition and bake together!
We made Orange Chocolate Chip muffins (recipe from Technicolor Kitchen blog), which were super easy to make, yet extremely yummy!
I've always loved anything orange chocolate (especially Trader Joe's orange-shaped orange chocolates!), and this is a new addition to my favorites.
Thanks for one of our roomies' boyfriend who went out and bought oranges for orange zest (I totally spaced out and forgot to buy some :( )
We doubled? tripled? the amount of chocolate chips. HAHA. But it was still yummy. The orange zest was still very strong. Ahh how I love citrus aroma!

I had a potluck farewell party the night after the sleepover, so I also made Dark Chocolate truffles with Cinnamon and Walnut (recipe also from Technicolor Kitchen blog; the original recipe uses hazelnuts, but I substituted them with walnuts since I was out of hazelnuts) while watching "New York, I Love You" (I personally liked it more than "Paris, Je t'aime"). It had been several years since I last made truffles.
I forgot how soft the chocolate can get on your palms when trying to roll them into little balls! I also doubled the amount of cinnamon used in the original recipe because I love cinnamon!

I should had kept on making truffles...I totally fell asleep watching our second movie of the night, "Moulin Rouge", even though it's one of my favorite movies. And, of course, my ex-roomies had to take a picture of me passed out on the couch...lovely.

Ex-roomie had delicious wine and cheese for us too! Thank you!
